Dr Mansoor Hasan requires no introduction to the city of Lucknow. An eminent cardiologist and Padma Shri awardee in 2011, he is one of the most respected personalities in the field of medicine. The people of Lucknow have more than one reason to be proud and grateful to Dr Hasan. However, the significant reason is the one that describes him the best – a noble and compassionate human being !

Dr Hasan passed his initial education from Aligarh and later went to London to study for MBBS. He came back from London to join KGMC, Lucknow in 1962 and again went to pursue MRCP from Edinburgh in 1964 & followed by FRCP. He did a special training in cardiology at London in 1984 and later worked in the Department of Cardiology, KGMC. Dr Hasan was the head of Cardiology in KGMC until he retired in 1996. He was President Cardiological Society of India, V.President International Society of Heart Research. He was also honorary consultant with Armed Forces of India, Cromwell Hospital London, Escorts Hospital New Delhi, member executive council of AMU / Jamia Millia Islamia / University of Kanpur / University of Lucknow, etc. He is also awarded, Certificate of Honour from the Indian Medical Association Lucknow ! He has guided over 30 thesis for MD & 50 papers of him have been published in various National & International Journals !

He is the brain and the force behind establishment of Lari Cardiology Centre in 1977 in KGMC. When asked about this great achievement, the Lari Cardiology Centre, Dr Hasan still remembers the day when he witnessed long queues of patients outside Cardiology department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, “Most of them were poor and had arrived there from different regions of UP”, he said. That set him on this mission to establish a Cardiology Centre of its own in the Lucknow city, which would benefit thousands of patients who had to travel a long distance for treatment incurring high costs for travel and lodging. As the concept of setting up a cardiology centre in Lucknow gained ground, Dr Hasan, then a young medico, mobilized resources from well-wishers and Lari Cadiology Centre came into existence. Mr Maqbool Ahmad Lari was the first and the biggest donor for the centre. Dr Hasan who has decades of teaching experience has recently joined Sahara Hospital as Chief Cardiologist. However, for him, medical profession is not for minting money. “I worked day and night and not for money, my work is for a cause and that some Doctors are still working for a good cause and not money, gives immense relief to me”.

He belongs to a family with a highly educated background. His father Mr Ajmal Hasan Khan was a practicing doctor and his mother hailed from the family of Nawab Hameedullah Khan Sarbaland Jang of Hyderabad. Dr Hasan inherited the legacy of the ancestors who had put their sweat and blood into the making of Aligarh Muslim University (great grandfather Maulvi Samiullah Khan was an associate of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan) and later Jamia Milia Islamia (Grandfather Mr Abdul Majeed Khwaja was its co-founder and served as its first Vice Chancellor during 1923-24 until his death). His grandmother founded Hameediya Girls Degree College at Allahabad where thousands of girls are studying today !

Dr Hasan’s affinity for philosophy and Sufism is an inherent part of his upbringing. He believes in seeing the good in all religions and all human beings. He has read Quran and Geeta several times and keeps going back to them for a deeper understanding of religion and the mysticism attached to various faiths. Though a devout Muslim, his family ingrained in him the concept and moral values of Secularism as the way of life for a peaceful and symbiotic existence. His family has been the caretaker of the Jwala Devi temple in his ancestral village, until as late as 50 years ago !
