Let’s Save Calligraphy

‘Calligraphy’ or ‘Khattati’, originated around 13th century and evidences of calligraphy in Lucknow can be found at tomb of Sheikh Ibrahim, Nadan Mahal which happens also to be the oldest surviving monument of Lucknow. Chota Imambara is one of the best examples of calligraphy on monument. Nawabs of Awadh had patronized this art form and Abdul Halim Sharar has given details about the same in his legendary book ‘Guzishta Lucknow’. Not only the nawabs but contribution of Munshi Nawal Kishore Press is also outstanding in promoting this art!.

As the quote by Kurt Vonnegut suggests … “To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.”

LUCKNOW Society has taken an initiative to spread this dying art. We request and invite people who want to learn this art from the experts. Learning along with exploration will be the key elements.
